MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Colleagues and Honorable Judges:
Members of the executive have been working to put together a stimulating speakers programme for the coming season. Our first dinner meeting will be held on September 24th, 2007 when Mr. Shimon Fogel will deliver the Alan B. Gold Memorial Advocacy Lecture. Mr. Fogel is the Chief Executive Officer of the Canada-Israel Committee which is the official representative of the organized Canadian Jewish community on matters pertaining to Canada-Israel relations. The title of his speech is: “Feeling Good or Doing Good: Successfully Navigating the Pro-Israel Advocacy Challenge.”
We have reproduced the letter sent by the Society to Louise Arbour, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Madame Arbour is a past recipient of the Lord Reading Law Society Human Rights Award. Our letter calls upon Madame Arbour to speak out against the almost exclusive censures of Israel issued by the United Nations Human Rights Council. Please read the letter and her reply. The executive is committed to maintaining the Society’s visibility in the community at large and I urge you to contact me should you wish to bring our attention to any other issue which you consider relevant to the Society’s mandate.
On a more mundane note, you should have received by now your invoice for annual membership in the Lord Reading Law Society. Please attend to payment as soon as possible. The receipt of membership dues are essential to balancing our budget. You can also download the invoice here.
I look forward to a stimulating speakers programme and I encourage our members to attend. Let me also remind the membership that our speakers are volunteers and it is incumbent upon us to treat them as we would guests in our homes. Questions put to our speakers should be posed with this in mind.
I look forward to seeing you at our first event on September 24th.
